چکیده

A set of rectangles S is said to be grid packed if there exists a rectangular grid (not necessarily regular) such that every rectangle lies in the grid and there is at most one rectangle of S in each cell. The area of a grid packing is the area of a minimal bounding box that contains all the rectangles in the grid packing. We present an approximation algorithm that given a set S of rectangles and a real constant ε > 0 produces a grid packing of S whose area is at most (1 + ε) times larger than an optimal grid packing in polynomial time. If ε is chosen large enough the running time of the algorithm will be linear. We also study several interesting variants, for example the smallest area grid packing containing at least k ≤ n rectangles, and given a region A grid pack as many rectangles as possible within A. Apart from the approximation algorithms we present several hardness results.

A THEORETICALLY CORRECT RESOURCE USAGE VISUALIZATION FOR THE RESOURCE-CONSTRAINED PROJECT SCHEDULING PROBLEM

The cumulative resource constraints of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) do not treat the resource demands as geometric rectangles, that is, activities are not necessarily assigned to the same resource units over their processing times. In spite of this fact, most papers on resource-constrained project scheduling mainly in the motivation phase use a strip packing of re...

Using Decomposition Techniques and Constraint Programming for Solving the Two-Dimensional Bin-Packing Problem

T two-dimensional bin-packing problem is the problem of orthogonally packing a given set of rectangles into a minimum number of two-dimensional rectangular bins. The problem is -hard and very difficult to solve in practice as no good mixed integer programming (MIP) formulation has been found for the packing problem. We propose an algorithm based on the well-known Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition whe...

On Weighted Rectangle Packing with Large Resources

We study the problem of packing a set of n rectangles with weights into a dedicated rectangle so that the weight of the packed rectangles is maximized. We consider the case of large resources, that is, the side length of all rectangles is at most 1 and the side lengths of the dedicated rectangle differ by a factor of at least 1="4, for a fixed positive " > 0. We present an algorithm which finds...

Approximation of Two-Dimensional Rectangle Packing

1-d bin packing and 2-d bin packing are classic NP-complete problems that are motivated by industrial applications of stock cutting, data storage, etc. In this paper, we look at a slightly more general problem that is primarily motivated by VLSI design. In VLSI design, one wants to pack a given number of rectangles (which might be RAM chips, transistors, etc.) into a wafer of minimum area to re...
